China announced to invest heavily into their railway system

Date 19 August 2009

China has decided to continuously upgrade their railway infrastructure throughout the next years. According to the Minister of railways Mr. Wang, China intends to raise investments to RMB 700 billion for the consecutive three years for expansion of the national railway system. The government has already spent RMB 247.49 billion within the first seven months of 2009 and is planning to place further investments up to RMB 600 billion until the end of the year. China will then have their railway kilometers increased to 86,000 km in operation. This places China right behind America at the second spot in railway kilometers usage.

However, according to the Minister of railways Mr. Wang, further 20, 000 km for construction are planned to be authorized by the Chinese government at the end of 2009. He continued forecasting that the railway system will expand to 110, 000 km by 2012. China hopes that by the measures taken it can increase the domestic demand for the railway industry.

Special attention is given to the improvement of the connection between the capital Beijing and Shanghai. According to Mr. Wang, nearly RMB 85 billion have already been put to use, which still only accounts for less than 40 % of the total investment for the network enhancement of the two cities.
