The upcoming World Trade Expo in Shanghai is expected to be the largest in the event’s 150-year history, with an expected 70 million visitors overall. Thus far, 192 countries and 50 international organizations have confirmed their participation. The event’s theme, “Better City, Better Life,” promotes ideals of urban sustainability and energy conservation.
Because US law prohibits the government from allocating funds to its pavilion, 100% of the $61 million project will be privately funded and fundraised. At 60,000 square feet, the American pavilion will be one of the Expo’s largest, and will occupy a prominent site across from the Chinese national pavilion.
The American pavilion’s theme is “rise to the challenge.” It will feature an eco-friendly city set in 2030, and according to Secretary of State Clinton “will showcase American business and technology, as well as culture and values.” The pavilion’s concept, based upon the four pillars of sustainability, teamwork, health, and the Chinese community in America, will point to America’s positive and forward-looking relationship with China.
The Expo promises to be an excellent opportunity for US-China trade. Not only will the national pavilion highlight American commerce and innovation, but several American firms will also host pavilions of their own, including Coca Cola and General Motors. Between 5 and 6 million people are expected to visit the US site alone, which will prove particularly popular among the 60 million Chinese visitors.
The event also marks the increasing global focus on the city of Shanghai, which is the largest city in China and its financial hub. For the US, it will allow extensive promotion of American brands and technology to Chinese and other foreign consumers alike. Finally, it will offer an excellent opportunity to many to become acquainted with the Chinese market and its strong growth potential.
